Solar Eclipse 2017: To Watch or Not to Watch

The Experts Opinion

Monday’s highly anticipated solar eclipse will be the first in nearly forty years. Everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will see at least a partial solar eclipse. As you may be aware, it is extremely dangerous to stare directly at an eclipse, and the odds of developing solar retinopathy are exponentially higher, so it is imperative to take the proper precautions or wear protective eye wear.

Thankfully there are innovative technological developments in solar eclipse viewers or “eclipse glasses” that make it easier to look at it without risking damage. Many of these viewers can be found at little to no cost and they can be used on top of your existing corrective lenses. However, do make sure that they meet the international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing and also be sure to inspect them for any damages or scratches.

Keep in mind it is extremely dangerous to remove your filters during a partial eclipse. Exposure to ultraviolet rays for even a short period of time may lead to something called photokeratitis, essentially a sunburn of the eye. Symptoms of photokeratitis may include redness in the eyes, a sensation as though there is something foreign in the eye, and extreme light sensitivity.

If you think you may have suffered eye damage, visit your eye doctor as soon as possible to ensure no lasting damage has been done. Remember that there is no pain associated with solar retinopathy, so it’s best to be proactive.
